He could only hope he didn't break Melisma's spirit or ruin her newfound confidence by turning down her offer but he couldn't bring himself to part with someone else to make up for losing another. It was his own fault that he didn't beat Solomon in the battle so he felt he had the responsibility to get her back if that's what Mazarine wanted. The fire red mare had been lying low around the Desert for so long, a part of Cain had to wonder if she wasn't completely happy here. She went obediantly enough when the other stallion called so maybe a part of her wanted fresh scenery. He wouldn't hold it against her if that's how she felt. He just wished she'd been upfront and honest with him if that was, in fact, the case. He didn't mind fighting for his mares. He never would hesitate to do that or to defend the herd. Getting hurt was all a part of the game when it came to being a lead stallion. He knew that when he signed up for the job and he wouldn't trade it for anything.

True, getting injured took away from protecting the herd but he would die fighting for any of the horses in the Desert if it came down to it and he wouldn't regret a second of it. As he went to offer the next best thing, she pricked her ears, seemingly alert and willing. The black mare could always let him know if it was too much or if she didn't want to go to the mainland and the draft stallion would understand completely. He only wanted to give her another way to help if she still wanted to. When she said she could do it, he smiled, his brown eyes lighting up with hope. Even if she found out nothing, it would be worth it to watch her break more out of her shell and flourish socially. He wanted only the best for his herd and she was a part of that now. Melisma had come to him like a shadow in the night and her withdrawn attitude pulled at him from the beginning. He wanted to show her just how strong she could be.

She looked thoughtful after saying she could do it, perhaps getting together a good game plan? The idea made Cain's eyes sparkle. "Thank you, Melisma. Anything would be helpful. I don't know anything about him and, for Mazarine's sake, I'd like to." As he watched her, something new flickerered in her expression that made his brows furrow with concern. Why did she suddenly lower her head and act like she couldn't look at him? Quizzically, he gave a soft nicker, hoping to draw her attention back to him. "Hey, what's up?" His voice was soft, coaxing. He hoped he could pull out her thoughts then maybe he could offer some words of reassurance in return. He didn't want her to leave with doubts on her mind.
