I don't th think light rail is efficient if what you mean by it is the old shortlines like the wwii days. We're too spread out now. It was good when the growth was straight North South in KC, and east west in Chicago, but now its more efficient for buses not saddled to buried rails in the streets.
But the subsidies went to airlines, airliners, and airports, not into passenger trains, so unless gasoline gets too expensive or planes start falling out of the sky, we may not even get high speed rail. Back in the prop days when an airliner was crashing every
mnonth, we'd have abandoned flying but its a rare thing for catastrophic crashes now, even with such crowded skies.
I'd be for Chicago to STL, to KC to Topeka to Wichita to OKC, to Dallas to Houston. Too bad they didn't build I-35 and 70 with wider division strips and taller bridges...we could have done it relatively cheap. Not now. Replies:
