GUIDELINES

- the Prairie stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity among the islands
- anyone is welcome to live here so long as they do not bring harm to the Prairie or any of it's residents
- adventure and exploration is not only allowed, but encouraged! residents are asked to use their better judgement and not travel to places that could bring them harm
- the head of the prairie has final say in all prairie matters. the secondary and third positions are not able to be challenged for and are selected by the head
- the guardians take on a more active role in the prairie; they must protect the inhabitants of the prairie and go on patrols of the prairie borderlines and shore. they can welcome strangers to the prairie and invite anyone to live here, though they must inform one of the leaders of any newcomers or visitors
you know the tune so the words dont matter

Unsettling was the best word he could pick to describe what happened next. Confusion rippled across the fierce rage that’d hardened his otherwise happy features. Castillon blinked a few times as he studied the silver-haired draft when the stallion did not behave as he assumed. Though his heart was beating fast and hard, Castillon was more than ready to throw himself into a fight with the much more muscled beast to continue to protect the young mare he’d put himself in front of.

Instead, he was… appraised?

It wasn’t unheard of to Castillon for those of the same gender to seek romance together; he had an older brother who only found romance with stallions, and when he was young and uneducated, he’d loudly asked a few too many questions with curiosity and been given an explanation by his very patient father. Thus, at a young age, Castillon had been exposed to understanding the world worked far more differently than some of primitive mindsets might believe. He wasn’t necessarily put off being called attractive by someone of the same gender, in fact, he might have even been rather flattered, but it was the way it was done by the Lagoon bachelor that set him on edge. The way Garmr had murmured appreciatively, as though already deciding Castillon was delicious, set the snowcap buckskin on edge.

You’re quite mistaken. The Prairie seems to have everything I want.

“Sorry to disappoint you,” Castillon replied, tight voiced, “But what you want doesn’t always want you back.” If he was older and more practiced, the words would have come out smoothly. Maybe he even might’ve been able to throw in a cocky smile and pretend to be as unbothered as his reply might imply. Castillon’s face remained taut, the energy of his uncomfortableness and irritation rolling off his body in waves. Especially as the stallion slowly looked him over, studying him. Castillon felt every inch those eyes touched and couldn’t remember a time he had felt more… vulnerable.

Then, as though Castillon was of no matter, the thickly built stallion glanced past him at Aura. Immediately his own comfort was long forgotten; Castillon’s expression hardened, and his black-lined ears flicked back, a hard snort pushing out of his nostrils with irritation. I will be back. The Lagoon bachelor warned, his eyes meeting Castillon’s again. This time, the secondary looked at the intruder with all the murderous rage he’d had when he’d first come upon the scene. The boldness this stallion expressed, claiming his intention to return, and telling Aura he could take her away, if she wanted, had worn Castillon’s patience thin. He was just one more wrong move away from launching himself at the stallion and beating him back into the ocean.

But apparently, the Lagoon bachelor was done with his so-called fun. He turned away from them and left; as he walked off Castillon made an instinctive step forward, everything in his body demanding he lower his head and trot off after the stallion and make sure he swam away for good…

Yet someone else needed his attention more.

Castillon did not move until the silver-haired brute was a speck among the ocean waves and then at last he sighed a heavy breath of relief, the tenseness immediately leaving his body. He glanced over at Aura, his expression concerned. He could see the streaks of tears down her cheeks and immediately assumed any of her troubles had come from being harassed by that stallion. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner,” he offered, guilt across his face. This must’ve been what his father meant about remembering there was a herd to check on; before Castillon lingered to make sure Zevulun was okay, he should have patrolled the Prairie to make sure everyone was safe, and the intruder was gone. “Are you okay? He didn’t…” he glanced down across her, but couldn’t see any marks of being roughly handled or bitten, “He didn’t touch you, did he?”
