The sun hesitates

Rieva tracks the stranger as he moves through the Bay. Had she been a true member of the Bay herd, she might have called for Fell or her mother to alert them, but Fell is neither her stallion nor her father, and her mother is not one among his mares. She doesn’t truly belong here, or anywhere, really. And yet, she feels some kind of obligation to the mute stallion who had found her and allowed her to live.

So she tracks the intruder. He keeps to shadows, so focused on keeping himself out of sight that she can’t imagine he’ll notice her there. Still, she knows she has to try harder than he does to remain hidden. He’s the color of shadow; she’s the color of ice and old bones, with eyes so pale they’re practically white. She sticks out like a sore thumb, and stays as far away from him as she can afford to make up for it.

When he stops, so does she. She watches him watch something else, and perceives him as some kind of predator sizing up his prey. Maybe it’s his size, or the way he moves through the forest with such intent. But when he suddenly cries out and scrambles backwards, Rieva is forced to reconsider.

She experiences a dizzying shift in perception as the huge stallion expresses fear. The roles are swapped dramatically, and his terror is contagious. Rieva’s ghostly pale eyes widen, and she begins to back away as well; both from whatever had startled the black shire, and the stallion himself. He could squash her on accident if she doesn’t get out of his way.

She doesn’t ever see what it is that startled him so badly, but she hears it charging. Rieva begins to pivot, but before she takes off, she gives a sharp squeal to catch the stallion’s attention. She doesn’t care about him, but he’s unfamiliar with this place, and she’s horrified at the thought of him leading a monster to the herd. “This way!” she commands sharply, and then she does take off, glancing over her shoulder to make sure that he follows, and leads the charging beast away.
