Upon hearing the harsh bugle from the coast, the copper stallion's ears flattened tightly against his poll, nearly buried beneath the silver-white mass of mane. A small part of him had hoped for Lucifer to forget or break his promise to return, but something deeper knew the black draft would, in fact, return.
Helios ushered his son and heir, Caesarion, to move the closest bits of the herd further away from the coast than they already were. It would do better, for now, to keep them from the invader's sights. The Arabian watched his son retreat across the sands, unease twisting like a viper in his gut.
Lucifer had only ever come for Romaro, supposedly because the male had sought to use the Lagoon men and the draft had taken slight to it. Vŕna and Daffodil had both been taken to exact this revenge. The first seasons of his son Mhidas' life had been spent in the dank muck because of this slight.
However, now that Romaro -- the very being Lucifer had come to collect -- was gone, Helios truly didn't know what the dark beast would do. Silently, Helios crossed the portion of his domain that separated him from his opponent. The best thing to do, he decided, would be to see what Lucifer said and did, what he threatened and how he acted, before deciding upon his course of action.
Helios spoke evenly after coming to a stop a fair distance from the draft, every syllable measured as they drifted across the span between them. "Lucifer," -- he began with a nod -- "I wondered if you were still coming when I did not see you this spring." His manner was alert but conveyed all the relaxed confidence of the ruler he was. His russett eyes never left the brute, always searching for the slightest inclination of an attack.
"I'm sorry to say that Romaro passed away since last you were here."
