Memories can be so fleeting

The black spotted mare had woke to the feeling of sinking and then struggling to breath as water had invaded her lungs, spluttering she had resurfaced, spotting a fallen tree close to her she had struggled to try and get it underneath her without success, the best she could manage was getting her head over the log to aid her in keeping it above water as she struggled to make sense of everything. She had no clue where she was or how she had ended up nearly drowning in the sea. She fought against the waves when she had seen a cluster of trees off in the distance. Land! With the last of her strength she had swam towards what she hoped would be her saviour, thankful that the current had changed suddenly and was sending her closer to a mass of trees and sand.

Washing up on shore her hooves dug into the sand, pulling herself from the harsh waves that had threatened to be her end, coughing and breathing heavy she stumbled forward, only stopping when she felt she was safe from the waves. She couldn’t remember how she ended up in the water, her memory was fuzzy, similar to her vision which was at least that was starting to clear.

Gazing around, her breathing beginning to return to normal although she felt exhausted. How did I end up fighting for my life in the sea? She wondered to herself, trying to remember what had happened but nothing was coming to her. She tried to remember home, seeing glimpses of a meadow but nothing else. Her head was pounding in the same rhythm to her heart, maybe she had hit her head. Could that be the reason her mind felt fuzzy? The reason she couldn’t remember what had happened or where she was from? But she remembered some stuff, random stuff that made no sense, names that she didn’t know who they belonged to, a deep sense that she shouldn’t trust every horse she meets and a logic that was keeping her from panicking.

With a sigh she look up at the storm clouds that were gathering, dark and ominous. Clearly her survival instincts were still working as she knew she should get out of the open, head further inland and find shelter to wait out the storm that threatened to fall, although looking further in the distanced the blue skies behind it promised that the weather wouldn’t last all that long.

Taking a step forward she falter when her vision swam, going out of focus briefly. Dropping her head she closed her eyes, taking deep breaths to try and clear the wooziness afflicting her. Feeling something running a path down her cheek she opened her eyes, spotting a few droplets of red on the sand, the scent telling her it was blood. Lifting her head slowly, the pieces started falling into place, blood running slowly down her cheek, not enough to be concerning but indicating a fresh wound on her head, the pounding in her skull, it all confirmed her suspicions that she had hit her head on something, somewhere that has caused her to black out. Somehow she had ended up in the water, clinging to a large tree trunk, something that had clearly been a stroke of luck as she hadn’t drown whilst unconscious, no that had come as she had woken and obviously managed to push herself off said log.

She was tired, hurting and confused as the first droplet of rain hit her back, the wind picking up and daylight disappearing into something darker. Walking as quickly as she felt she could without going dizzy, she reached the treeline just as a flash of light lit up the dark sky, the booming rubble that came next making her jump slightly. Weaving through the trees she tried to find a suitable spot to shelter as the wind whipped through them, making her shiver. Not finding anywhere more suitable she stopped at a small cluster of trees and bushes, this will have to do she thought to herself as she turned her hind end to the wind, closing her eyes as another flash of lightning lit up the sky she tried to huddled in on herself as she set to wait out the storm that she hoped would pass quickly.
