I’ve Been Burning In Water

Water is evil. Well it is if you’re a young girl made completely out of fire. Ever since she was born the world has been a strange, cold and damp place. Everything that’s bad when you’re a fire child. No I don’t mean she likes fire, or is fascinated by it, nor is she a pyromaniac and nor does she suffer pyrophobia. She is different. She is made of fire completely and utterly. Her whole body is fire. It always has been and most likely always will be. She’s the least normal of her siblings, one of earth, one of air and one of water. That’s not to say she dislikes them they are just very different. They at least can have some semblance of touch, they don’t destroy everything just be being unlike her. Serafina the girl made of fire. Even her appearance scares people. Her sisters and brother may be a bit odd but they are safe in the sense they won’t hurt you by touching you. One is made of earth, one of air and one of water. Sure they have their own problems but at least not everyone runs away from them. Unlike Serafina she gave up trying to make friends with other children after she burned one, it was an accident. She’s never been able to touch anything without hurting it, she’s a destructive force and it doesn’t matter what she thinks or feels that’s just what she is. No matter what she does something is probably going to get hurt.

The only other youngster that Serafina’s known not to run away or call her names was a boy she met on the beach. Flynn. He was nice to her and he didn’t even know her. She’d liked him he was nice he’d made her smile. The previous events of the day had not made her smile. Sera hadn’t known there was a giant wave coming until everyone else in the labyrinth had started to yell and scream and run. She’s been confused at first and scared because people were panicking and she didn’t know why. The fire child often kept herself to herself and thus this sudden amount of people running and yelling was not just strange but frightening. Serafina wasn’t an early riser so when she’d woken the wave had already decimated the cove and the islands. It was the yelling that had woken her, that had made her realise something was wrong. She didn’t know what though; she didn’t what it was for a while there. She was lucky in the sense no one ran into her or knocked her over in their haste but no one wants to touch a scorching hot fire. Scared and confused she’d followed the older people her feet leaving burnt footprints in their wake. Why was everyone scared and running? She didn’t know but it made her start to panic as well. It was when she reached the highest point of the labyrinth that the threat became clear. She’d heard the yelling of course identified the phrase flood and tsunami. Whilst she knew what flooding was the term tsunami meant nothing to her. As far she knew they’d been running to higher ground to escape a flood she just didn’t know how severe the flood was.

When she saw the wall of water she knew. She didn’t know it was tsunami. She knew it was death, death for her and death for any other faerie that feared water, which couldn’t swim. She had greater reason to fear the oncoming crashing water than any of the other faeries she was made of fire. If she was hit by all that water, she’d die, not from drowning not by the force of the water smashing and breaking bones but by the water itself. That much wet liquid would extinguish her wipe out the child of fire for good. Seeing the wall of water crashing forwards a scream tore from the girl a rough crackling noise of burnt and burning vocal chords. Her small feet of flames sped up as she panicked. She didn’t want to die. She didn’t want that water anywhere near her. She could already feel it the damp particles sizzling against her flame. She’d die and she didn’t want to.

In her panic she forgot everything all she knew was the fear coursing through her and the fact that she was going to die. She couldn’t swim, she wouldn’t need to swim she’d just die be extinguish. She couldn’t sail away in a boat she’d burn it down. Panic unlike any other went through her. She had no familiar to help her, didn’t know about her siblings, didn’t know about Flynn the only person she dared call a friend. She even forgot her wings, the very things that could save her. She was so scared and so terrified of that giant wave. The wave that was thousands bigger than her small flame, she was petrified to be covered in that much water was utterly terrifying. If she’d remained in that state of sheer fear for much longer she’d have died, the fire child would have been extinguished her flame put out. But a yell from nearby broke into her somehow and her eyes focused on a mother scooping up a baby in her arms looking hurriedly at Serafina flapped her own set of white wings and screamed at her to fly to move to get away from the water. She saw the woman take off from the ground her white wings unfurling carrying her and her baby up and up and up away from the oncoming wave.

Serafina had never used her wings yet. They’d only just finished growing. Would her wings of fire work? She didn’t know but she had to try had to do something other than just stand there and wait for the wave to crash down on her. She didn’t want to die and flying would be her only way to escape. Unfurling her fire wings the girl jumped and swept the flaming wings down and up and down and up. She was shocked and surprised as they kept her in the air and for a moment she forgot the oncoming water but not for long and she worked her newly grown wings harder and harder as she flew upwards and away from the wall of water she had to get higher than it and away from it. Up in the air she could see the others who were heading to safety flying somewhere. She assumed towards land and so she fell into place besides them just far enough out of the way that her flames wouldn’t reach anyone.

And now, now she was trapped in the core with everyone else except she had to be even more careful here, she had to keep out of the way so she didn’t hurt anyone and that was hard when the entire population was squeezed in there. For the most part she was keeping out of the way of people and the waters edge. However she seemed to have gathered a small number of children to her, who had decided that she was perfect for warming and drying their clothes as long as they didn’t get too close.
