At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Hex had found himself abandoning Saw Tooth after Zelda disappeared. Why, he didn't know. One would think that he would stick closer to his familial ties after losing his love interest, but instead, he pushed them away as if they added to the pain. He ended up wandering for a while, his fur growing shaggy as he took up residence around the colder base of Misty Mountain. The sorrow had faded after a while, but the longing never stopped nagging him in the depths of his heart. He occasionally traveled around Blossom to keep his mind sharp, meeting strangers at random and often doing nothing more than striking up a quick conversation before continuing on his way. Through these means, he kept a tab on his old pack and the goings on of the forest.

Upon leaving Misty Mountain that morning, he decided to visit his favorite haunt, a secluded little pool of water with a small waterfall that he and Zelda had frequented. His heart always pounded when he thought of her and his mind never wanted to release the false hope he conjured every time he ventured there and found it just as empty as the last time. As his thoughts wandered to past memories, he found himself startled out of his revelry by a hare that darted towards him on the old deer trail he was walking. Purely out of instinct, Hex's jaws snapped around the animal's neck as it made to run by him. His teeth connected and the insane fright on the rabbit's face was frozen there in death. Sighing, Hex dropped the rabbit, picked it up with a proper grip around the broken neck, and began on his way again, thinking that if anything, he could at least eat a peaceful meal with the quiet hush of the waterfall filling the air. His pads trod softly over the dirt path, avoiding the few scattered rocks and pebbles as he drew closer to the little grove.

The path crossed onto another and widened. It was there that Hex smelled something he doubted existed. It had to be his mind playing tricks on him, calling up old scents to add to his pathetic hopes of finding Zelda waiting for him. Trying to dismiss the illusion and failing, he found his feet moving quicker, his pace suddenly springing into an awkward trotting, loping mixture as the dead rabbit thumped against his chest in rhythm. His ears strained to hear what was ahead of him as he rounded the corner. He nearly fell over trying to stop when his golden orbs landed on her form standing at the edge of the pool. The rabbit fell from his lips, landing with a thump in the dust as he worked through whether she was real or not. Finally unable to answer the question form a distance, he stepped slowly over to her side and poked her in the flank with his nose. Feeling flesh, his heart fluttered with triumph and joy as he sprang to embrace her in a kind of wolfish hug. All the while, he muttered over and over again,

"Zelda, I thought I'd lost you."
