Loyalty means nothing unless it has at its heart the absolute principle of self-sacrifice ....................................................................................................................................................................................
The first few weeks with Kohaku had been rough. He had not been able to sleep hardly at all because during the day he had to watch over his daughter Blayre and all throughout the night he had to wake up and collect Kohaku as she leaned out over the boundary, pushing against the limits of the terra. He had grown irate and irritable, and thus had withdrawn from his pack and his new mate. The grey brute felt badly about it but it would hopefully force Zig to bond with the rest of the pack in his emotional absence. The pack would forgive him when he finally returned to his duties – they had all made vows of loyalty to him. And then had come the point of no return, when it all changed. He had addressed Kohaku’s training and she had responded with all the ferocity of a caged killer, demanding answers to questions of her own. How will you injure one link, render the chain useless, and still keep my faith in the hope of the better, intact? Will you encourage me? Break me? Set me loose? Seduce me? All these are plausible options. Tell me, o brave ruler, your plan of action. I would rather slit my own throat than listen to preaching.
She was dangerous and unstable, but her words did not to instill fear in the brute. She was simply lost from her trail. He would never seduce her and take advantage of her state. He would not break her, just break the chains that held her so steadily to the Prince of Malignant Felicity. He would encourage her to become stronger and believe in herself. He would set her loose from the eternal vows she made to him when and only when all of this was accomplished. Only when she was saved from herself. Healthy and wise enough to choose where to go and what to do with the remainder of her life – she was young still, and would therefore still have years and years ahead of her. Kohaku knew more than he imagined that she would, so instead of training her, he simply supported her and showed her how the world worked through different eyes. And slowly, she had begun to change. The fae had begun to soften, at least to him, even as her body firmed. Muscles formed as she began to trust him, and though she hadn’t reached out to the other members of the pack yet, it was only a matter of time.
Or rather, that was the path that she had been on. The scream that ripped through the woods foreshadowed the creation of a second path of fate forming in Kohaku’s future. One that included Nikandros. For that was whose voice it was. The Prince of Malignant Felicity had returned to Aurora Borealis, no doubt in order to attempt to reclaim Kohaku. The King of Aurora Borealis released his muscles and pushed against the earth, his paws barely touching the earth as he headed toward the boundary. His nares flared – no doubt the other member’s of his pack had heard the alien’s vocals, and he came upon fresh tracks. Two sets. One made him smile – Hellene, the one who he had originally distrusted and wanted chained up until she proved herself, which she had when she had saved his daughter’s life. The other flattened his lips once more. Kohaku. What would the fae do, seeing the brute who had captivated her heart and held it prisoner? She had just started settling in, just started changing… would Nikandros’ presence set her back? Or worse… set her off? As he ran, he tilted his maw toward the sky and howled, alerting the pack of the danger that lay at the boundaries. Announcing his return. Kalgalath had been absent from his duties long enough. The King of Aurora Borealis was returned.
And then came the sight at the boundary… Nikandros had gone too far. If it was threat or a fight that Nikandros wanted, Kalgalath would have given it to him. Gladly. The brute had trespassed on his terra the first time, threatened his pack members, and had been disrespectful. A fight was warranted but Kalgalath had taken pity on him and had held off the attack, instead demanding Kohaku choose. This time, Nikandros had done something worse. He had kidnapped a pup. Hellene’s pup. The timberess already lay ready to strike, while Kohaku merely stood and stared at the brute, tears staining her face. Kalgalath approached and raised his hackles, his muscles screaming to be released. But he refrained… Nikandros could kill the pup if Kalgalath was not quick enough in his attack, and that was not something he would risk. “I see that at least your manners have kept you from crossing my boundary… Yet you have been proven a fool. A very stupid fool.” Deep vocals escaped from between his exposed daggers, low and quiet, emerging in a hiss.
Icy arctics shifted to lay upon Kohaku… for she was the wildcard. How much had she changed? Would she stand against the Prince or would she crumble back into his embrace? Moving to her side he touched her shoulder with the tip of his nose. This would undoubtably be one of the most difficult times of her life, facing Nikandros for the first time. Even if she wouldn’t acknowledge it, Kalgalath cared for Kohaku as he cared for Blayre – as a daughter, and it pained him to see her so sad. And then, moved to Hellene’s side, touching her shoulder as well, this touch with a bit more pressure. Hellene’s temper was reknowned, or at least it had been until her adopted pups had seemingly softened her. But if she acted without thinking, Khaleesi could be injured.
Finally, the tall grey brute stalked back so that he was standing, facing the Prince. His arctics lay back upon him and he lifted his lips, a soft snarl growing until it changed into monologue. Rage began to grow and bubble until it boiled over. There was no excuse for the titan’s actions. None. “A PUP!” Words changed to a thunderous roar, and his chest rumbled with each syllable that dropped. “YOU DARE THREATEN THE LIFE OF A PUP! You are but a pup yourself in actions and in wisdom. You no doubt seek the return of Kohaku but she is no prisoner. She sought ME out. She wanted safe haven away from you. You claim to love her and this is how you show it. You disgust me. Now speak as to what your plans are. The quicker you do so the quicker the pup will be safely where she belongs.” Cocking each of his hind joints slightly, he prepared to lunge at the thief should the pup not be immediately released.
