Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

I'm trying my best to imitate Sulan but he makes it look so easy. He stands so still like a statue, almost like he's not breathing. He looks straight ahead, not even looking at the occasional leaf blowing or branch shaking in the wind. How can he do that? His head is low, his ears forward. I lower myself just like him, trying to keep my balance but my feet are way too big for my gangly body and my balance is shaky. My jaw tightens, my eyes straining to only look in one direction, especially when the wind blows. I try to keep perfectly still but oh, it's so hard!

When he looks at me, I let myself relax with a large exhale before I look at Sulan. I nod in answer.

"I think I got it. How do we know when to bounce? What if we are seen?"

He tells me again to try it out and I brace myself, not looking forward to the strain once more. I know that this hunting trip means a lot to Sulan but it is so hard to hold still. I have learned much from dad before he went missing. He taught me how to pounce and the basics of fighting. I trained with my brother Jak as young puppies but when he decided to go off exploring on his own, I had to resort to other methods, using bushes and such for training. They didn't give me as much to work with as a living creature though. I wonder if we'll actually catch something today or if it will just be boring training.

I catch Sulan's eyes and know that he's still waiting for me to do as he was doing so I try again, going stock still, my breathing almost come to a halt as I lower my head and prick my ears, trying my best to look in only one direction. Of course then that pesky wind has to blow and I hear a branch crackling. Then the tiniest squeak....and a squirrel jumps off the branch and races across the ground!

"Squirrel!"

I yell before I even know I've said it, my tail wagging behind me as I launch from cover without a second thought, sprinting after the tiny mammal. The squirrel makes it to a tree of course, climbing up and out of sight while I stop at the bottom, already panting and barking in eagerness. Once I see that the squirrel's not coming back, I finally turn back to where Sulan is probably still waiting, my tail slowing as I remember what we were supposed to be doing. My ears droop and I lower my head.

"Sorry, Sulan..."

I mumble.
