Her breath comes in laboured gasps.
Paws pounded the dirt as her flight is driven through pure terror. Heart pumping as she dodges trees at top speed, showing an agility that even she did not know she had, she flees. It had started out innocent, feeding on a carcass of a deer that had been killed yesterday. Nothing had been guarding it, so she thought herself safe. That is, until the fiercest snarl came from behind her. Vaya had reacted on reflexes and leaped away. Lucky she had, for she felt a tug on her tail as jaws closed on the tip of her hair, pulling out a tuft as the young wolf pulled away. She yipped in pain but had no time to pause. The snarling from behind her hadn’t stopped so she took off – the sounds of pursuit dogged her.
It wasn’t a wolf, that at least she knew. Beyond that, she wasn’t sure. The scent was musky but she didn’t stop to examine it – her whole focus was on escape.
Finally, she begins to calm down and realize that the sounds of pursuit had stopped. Had she been thinking straight, she would have realized that they had stopped a while ago. But she is young yet, and learning. Having seen only three springs there is much in this world she is not accustomed to yet. As she calms, her paws slow and finally stop. Her head droops, limbs shaking from exertion. It takes a few minutes for her breathing to quiet, the ragged gasps filled the clearing she had found herself in.
Suddenly, she freezes once more.
Strange scents surround her, strong ones. She has unknowingly fled into another’s territory. Her body hunches close to the ground, the terror threatening to take over once more. Tail tucked, she backs up a few steps. How was she supposed to get herself out of this one when she didn’t even realize from what direction she had come?
Also, her tail hurt. This was not turning into a good day.
