With the lightening storms going on in Diveen, Cass wasn't finding it easy to stay there. He felt like he was starting to get eye spasms, to tell you the truth. Every time he heard the boom of the thunder or saw the flash of white in the sky, he grew anxious, like it might light a fire and take out all of Moladian. His siblings told him he was overreacting and his mother did her best to comfort him and reassure him that Diveen had withstood a lot worse but he couldn't be so sure. It just seemed so....destructive. He was tired of curling up in the den to wait it out though. He wasn't sleeping much and he felt more jumpy than usual. Plus, he was sure that there was something stuck in his nose. Or something wrong with it, or something. When he was a pup with no sight, he felt like he mapped out everything by smell. The smell of his mother, his siblings, his den. The smell of milk and meat.
But as he grew older and leaner, growing into his bigger paws, he found that his sense of smell didn't seem so strong anymore. It was still there, just not so bold. When his brother Raz could smell another wolf a mile away, Cass was lucky if he could smell his sister just outside the den. He had to work that much harder to track and if it was older than a day, you could forget it. He felt frustrated, like he was being punished for something. He'd tried having his mother check his nostrils, sure that a bug or a twig or something had gotten stuck up in there and getting it out would fix everything but alas, she always said that there was nothing there. He tried snorting water up his nose and found out just how badly that burned, but he wasn't able to get anything out that way, either.
So in the end, he'd just accepted that he wasn't so good at smell, but at least he was plenty good at other things! Like investigating. He was following the sounds of the river and found a dam-like object made of trees and bushes and all kinds of debris. It went clear across the river. He'd thought about trying to cross it, if only to show off to his siblings, but it seemed pretty unsteady with all the wobbling and cracking. Those particular noises reminded him too much of the storms in Diveen and that made the decision for him. He would not be going near the bridge, then. But when he saw other figures across the river, he got curious, leaning forward to make them out better. He tried to smell them, but it was only a faint trace he caught. The ocean, maybe? He couldn't be sure.
It looked like an adult male and a younger female, maybe close to his age. Wagging his tail, he barked a greeting. Would they hear him over the roaring of the river?
