Amour's familiar voice found his way into his ears. It was not so much what he said, but how he said it that upset Nimbus. The calm voice that he said it with, as though everything would be alright. He would not drop his eyes once he locked gazes with him. A voice broke from his lungs startled himself. It was full of concern and worry and most of all anger. "You act like everything will be fine, no matter what. I am a foolish stallion. What would you do if your precious Kahawa was put in danger because of my actions!? Or worse, what if I intentionally put her in danger. She might be able to protect herself from whatever beast I have inside of me, but you... You couldn't hurt a fly." He stomped his hooves into the sand in sequence with his words, he must have looked terrifying.
That was the best way to protect his friend from himself, to scare him away. The more Nimbus talked the more his temper boiled, but he did not stop. "If I am to have a subordinate, I will need one that can prevent me from hurting those I come to love. I'm sorry, Amour, but that is not you. You are--" What finally cut Nimbus off was the whinny of a mare in the distance.
He looked over the edge of the dune to where it came from, and saw his lightly colored mare being gleefully battered by waves. She prevented Nimbus from tearing Amour apart with his words, and was therefore a valuable member to the herd. He wondered if she would condone his behavior? Was this the best he could possibly do? Nimbus allowed his voice to cool, but not his mind. "I'm sorry, Amour; I only mean the best for you." Looking at the mare in the sea he said, "she is the latest addition to the family. Come, I'll introduce you." He gestured with his head in her direction, and started walking. He gave Amour the chance to respond to his anger this time without running away like before. His only hope was that he had protected Amour with his fury.
