nobody likes a lazy handmaid

So far the horses he'd sparred with were strangers still but he knew that could change at any moment. A spar could be like a conversation between two bodies without the words. It could end in friendship with the same breath that it could end in lifelong rivalry. Her swollen shoulder didn't seem to slow the mare down any. She still had a fire in her eyes that Dex could respect. He had no doubt that no matter how sore she was, she still wouldn't hesitate to beat the crap out of someone who had it coming. He was a little surprised that a mare would choose a life without a herd but he guessed if there was anywhere to call home, this wouldn't be a bad spot. It had a large field with ample grass if you knew where to dig for it right now. He bet in the spring it would be filled with knee deep grass ripe for the picking.

There were trees on the edges to block the worst of the wind and give shelter from the piercing sun when it got too hot overhead. There were creeks and streams of fresh water to drink from and ocean access for incoming traffic if you wanted to socialize. It just wasn't for him. Dex wasn't built to be a lone stallion. He liked having friends and acquaintances. He liked having someone to protect. Now that he had Talien, he found what he'd been searching for and more. She was his end game. The red dun mare chuckled when he told her about the grass by the stream, seemingly taking his words to memory. He hoped she would, anyway. If there was any way he could help her survive living here, he would be glad to give whatever tips he could, though he was no expert on this environment by any means.

When he asked if she slept here, she repeated the word and looked around as if she wasn't sure what he meant. Finally she said it was soggy there but she slept in the trees. He felt his lips twitch in amusement. "Makes sense." He murmured in response. She moved closer then and he was sure to hold his ground, letting her make the moves so she didn't feel pressured by his presence. He wanted her to feel at ease with him. He wanted nothing from her so they could hold a light conversation and go on their own way at any time. The ball was in her court. She admitted she wasn't a fan of swimming and seemed disappointed that you couldn't get anywhere without going in the water. His eyes twinkled as he smirked and nodded. "You have a point. There is definitely a lot of water."

Glancing around and toward the shore, he rolled his shoulders in a shrug as he looked back at her. "Though the season might make it more welcoming when the sun brings an easy sweat to your skin. I guess if a herd life isn't for you, this wouldn't be too bad a place to be." He raised a brow expectantly as he looked around with a gentle snort. "You must know how to take care of yourself. You don't seem afraid of being alone." It was more an observation than anything, really.
