once there was, once there was not

The daylight hours were long beneath the summer sun and Irshi took this opportunity to doze lightly under the shade of an ancient oak that stood as if a lone solider in the expanse of the meadow. She knew that while she slept, so too did the stars above her—shimmering on despite the sun’s greed robbing them of their brilliance. She never cared to dance during the day—the abundance of sunlight felt like too much, an affront on her own luster. Yet, like the stars, she gleamed anyway, even at rest.

It was a deep nicker that roused her, and with a fluttering of her fire-brown eyes, she saw him—a thick, black and white stallion adorned with feathers of foot and weathered with the marks of time.

“Oh,” she remarked sleepily, peering in his direction. “I did not expect you yet.”

Taking a few small steps through the lengthy wheatgrass, she twisted her slim frame around the bend of the tree trunk and smiled warmly at him.

“I am not surprised to see you though,” she added.

Even though she spoke as if she knew him, they had never met. Irshi could see enough about him from his posture, the kind nature of his eyes. So even though she did not know his name, he was no stranger. The golden girl had never met a stranger. All that lay around them had existed since the beginning—all that changed was their shape.

She looked to the ancient tree under which she stood, regaling in the sturdiness it bestowed, and then back to the stallion, admiring their likeness.

“Perhaps when you return to the earth, you will be as the oak.”
