----

It’s been no more than a quarter of an hour of wandering, slogging through the thick mud of the creekbed before she hears movement behind her. Esther pauses, turning halfway back to look over her shoulder. There’s a mare approaching, short and compact, picking her way through the mud behind Esther; her muzzle up to the air as if the new mare is following her scent. As she draws closer, Esther notes that she has a pretty, light coat and curved ears that Esther has never seen before. Esther smiles at the mare, before she realizes she’s still to Company is exactly what she came here seeking, so Esther stays where she had stopped. SHe does turn more fully, so she’s facing the direction the filly is approaching from. Esther tries to keep herself from getting too excited; who knows if this filly will be interesting, let alone friendly. And the likelihood she’s ready to set off on some aimless adventure with Esther? It’s slim, but still possible. The line between hope and silliness is fine, and she’s always toed it.

When the other mare finally draws close enough that Esther won’t have to shout, she lets out a friendly whinny and says “Hi!” Her voice is enthusiastic, and Esther grimaces a little at her own tone. “Is it just you?” She asks, glancing around for anyone else. She doesn’t notice anyone else approaching, which bodes well. Maybe this mare will be exactly what she came here looking for. “I’m Esther,” she offers. “I’m glad to meet you, I haven’t seen anyone else yet - was starting to think I’d be alone all afternoon.”
