Miriella gasped audibly as the stallion fell to the ground and slid in front of her. The slick ground gave his body the momentum it needed to crash directly into a tree. Miriella glanced up as the branches shook and trembled, dropping little bits of water and ice over both of them, then looked back down at him. Let’s add insult to injury, he said, and Miriella huffed.

He looked terrible, what with the streaks of blood made garishly bright by the glittering ice all around them. She could smell it soaked across his skin, and as she watched him try to stand and fall back down, Miriella took a cautious step closer to him. “You’re lucky you’re not dead,” she said without any sympathy in her voice. Even as she hovered over him, coat torn by the wildcat, bleeding, unable to stand, Miriella couldn’t be the gentle sort. It just wasn’t in her nature.

Still, despite herself, there was some concern there. He’d just fought off the wildcat, after all. What if he hadn’t been there and she’d found the hungry cat alone? Miriella was no fighter, and now that enough time had passed she felt ashamed at how she’d frozen. If not for this stallion sacrificing himself, she could have very well been buried beneath the ice storm raging over the Inlet as the evening stretched further.

She didn’t like feeling indebted toward anyone. Miriella’s ears flicked forward, then back, then forward again. There were no other sounds aside from the wind shaking the tops of the pines and their breathing. Whatever yowl she’d heard behind her when she’d first fled must’ve been what she’d hoped; the stallion’s hooves had found their mark.

“Thank you, I guess.” She remarked, feeling uncomfortable with offering gratitude but somehow still managing to get the words out anyways.
