Pale nostrils flared with deep, heaving breaths as the stallion raced his sons down the beach, sand flying out from behind their three forms and scattering in their wake. Laughter and groans rang through the summer air as, once more, the silver grullo stallion beat the boys to the boulder they'd determined was the finish line.
A breathless smile spread upon Canis' maw as he looked upon his sons, golden-dappled Aconite and bay-splashed Zircon. They were growing up to be strong lads, and though both boys had decided to stay and fill guard positions in the Bay, Canis knew one day they would leave these shores. Already two of his daughters had born foals this past spring; it wouldn't be long before his sons, too, had other obligations besides minding their father and taking orders from Emhry or Khoshekh.
Coughing drew his attention from the two year-olds down the beach a short distance. With a snort, he gestured for Aconite and Zircon to head back the way they'd come. It was his job to deal with anyone coming into the Bay as third and advisor to the leads. So, the splash-marked stallion went searching for the source of the coughing fit. His ears, one masked with white, pricked forward with interest and concern as he saw a silver bay figure laying in the surf. As he came forward, Canis spoke:
