🌙
The silver-haired male had sensed for days that Hellfyre would soon give birth. As with all his children before, Canis was nervous in the days preceding her foaling. The fear had often lurked in the grullo stallion's mind that something would happen to them-- mother and/or child-- if he was not present. And as nothing happened so far with his presence in accordance with the superstition, he had resigned to giving the bay mare the space she needed, but little else.
So, when Hellfyre did begin her labor, her silver claimer was nearby. Only the moonlight on his hair betrayed the male's presence as he inched closer to the mare's location with every minute that passed. Canis' breath caught in his chest when the sounds of labor stopped some short while later. He forced himself to wait in the long quiet of the night, ears straining forward to catch any sounds. The stallion was only able to hold himself back for a handful of minutes before pressing forward.
The foliage between them thinned into dogwood bushes; their shed twigs crackled beneath his hooves. Hellfyre called his name, his heart leaping at the edge of panic in her voice. "I'm here," he called as the grullo manifested from the dark of the wood, slowing as he made to join her.. them. His mismatched eyes fell to the little red-hued shape at the bay's side. Every fiber of his being warmed at the sight of the small spindle-legged filly. "I'm here," he murmured again, brushing his maw against Hellfyre's.
