The "15th to 31st, Cleveland east to Van Brunt" area you describe should have made you the ONLY white boy with an ice cream truck in that neighborhood. Summer of '69, I was fresh out of Belton High School. I used to drive up 71 highway and through Swope Park to a Pepsi Cola bottling plant on 63rd Street. There was some kind of Chiefs facility on the south side of 63rd, across the street from the Pepsi factory.

I was one of the FEW white boys working there, but I didn't have any trouble.

I have to dig DEEP into my dusty memory, but Spring of 1970, I went to the Draft Board at 25th and Pershing for my CLASSIFICATION physical.

I passed the draft physical 1A. I had a HIGH Draft Lottery number and sweated the rest of 1970, fearing that Dick Nixon was going to send me to 'Nam, but he never called...
