do you want to live in the mountain house full time or split time even in retirement?

If it’s full time in the mountains during retirement I’d downsize and save to make the mountain place as awesome as possible. If you want to keep a house in the city and one in the mountains, I’d go option B. Get a nicer place in the city you will enjoy for years, have a more modest mountain home for visits. Worst case if you later decide to leave the city both could be sold for a new mountain home. By then you’ll have enough time in the modest mountain home to know what you really want.

That is my approach with a beach house (or will be in the next year or so). Start modest at the beach, upgrade later if I decide to live there full time in retirement.
