At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

“That’s good to know Mae,” Terrel began with a small smile as he clambered up to sit, his optics noticing an amused glaze in the female’s eyes. “I am very well thank you and no of course you are not any bother. In fact it’s nice to have some company.” The multi coloured brute replied. He smiled as she agreed that they had similar tastes in places. He nodded absentmindedly. He searched her face for any expressions but he could not note on anything significantly important. The soldier grinned as she laughed about the comment on obsessions with water. There was always something about water than relaxed him; making his sorrows disappear in a few blinks of the eye but it only happened if he was not occupied in any company. Luckily today he had no lingering despair and welcomed Mae’s presence with a friendly smile and he too hoped that she liked his company too. Terrel always tried his hardest in treating everyone equally and fairly whilst neither boring them with politeness. Mae and Terrel’s last meeting together had certainly not been boring. Fishing had been great fun even though it was short and a failure. He was pleasantly surprised that he was this open with someone he had known for a short amount of time.

“I agree,” Terrel said, “it is lovely just to rest by the stream and let it carry your troubles away and I am sure many other wolves would agree with us too.” He confided although he was not at all sure why he was telling Mae this. He found her easy to talk to – she didn’t speak over him and he didn’t speak over her. It would have been what he would have called a ‘harmonious conversation.’ He shivered a light breeze swept over his bodice bringing along the perfumes of many other wolves.

As his lightly muscled body stretched out he heard a soft whine of a yawn escape from Mae’s maw. He was glad that she could be so relaxed in his company – he would hate to be intimidating like the one who sired him. His brown lobes flickered to meet the words response of Mae as she explained. She clarified that she came here occasionally and that it could be exceptionally beautiful at the right time. All through her lyrics Terrel nodded – listening to how she explained that further down the river it was not easy to find pleasant company. “Romance river,” he said gently, “yes – I have a feeling that my mother is lingering around there…” He said with a voice of disgust skimming the words. He knew that she was lonely but he hated the thought of purposely forcing love upon someone. Sadness seemed to penetrate into his eyes – soon she might have a proper family; a related family and he would be forgotten. Terrel sighed and diverted his eyes from the water; he knew he shouldn’t have thought that; Channing would never do that to him… He hoped.

The girl seemed hesitant about asking his age when he met Channing, he smiled before speaking to let her know that there was no trouble caused in asking it. Terrel did not really think of it as a personal question; a question such as: ‘why are you adopted?’ would be personal. If she had enquired that then he would have retained himself, he wished not to be pitied. “I was around 6 months of age and I ate meat on my own earlier than most wolf pups; they usually begin at 7 months. Yes, this is a very special place to me.” Terrel responded merrily. He wanted to let Mae know that he did not mind these kinds of questions – they were not overly personal so the boy was happy enough to answer her curiosity.

“Glad to know you are prepared now, though I’m sure you would have been just fine anyway. Yes, she was okay but,” Terrel paused, not sure if he should have been sharing this with Mae but he had never had anyone to talk to expect his mother. “She has been around males and I am pretty positive she is seeking out a mate…It is not so much the gesture of it because I understand it is normal and she deserves someone special but I am troubled with my past. I do not wish to be pitied but my mother has sacrificed so much for me and I do not wish to see her go through things my pup eyes saw.”

Terrel shook his head, “sorry.” Why had he blurted out all this? Grumbling to himself the boy plastered a smile.

A loud and arrogant cluster of crows flew menacingly a head; he glanced at them in disapproval and grinned when he saw that Mae too was looking at them with an annoyed expression in her eyes. His grin widened even more when her lyrics hit his ears. “Nope, no respect at all,” he agreed. “Maybe they are purposely attempting to ruin other wolves or lera’s day. Maybe it’s a game.” He suggested and once against stretched out but this time a little less extreme. His toes rippled in satisfaction and his back curved with a lust for contentment.

With a final stretch, Terrel looked over at Mae. “Are Henadin and Kahlan sorted?” He enquired, not positive on what to say. He had left fairly early on and did not see what had come of the two new comers.

Sighing, Terrel gripped the earth and slowly but gradually slipped down onto his stomach. Rocks jabbed at the sensitive parts of his abdomen and it made him wince in discomfort but after a certain amount of fidgeting got him into an ever so slightly more comfortable position. “Mae, would you say we are friends?” He asked, wishing to know his position with her. Terrel classed her as a buddy but he had not experienced friendship very much. The closest he had come before meeting Mae had been Nova but that was a one-time meeting and out of boredom. He had met Mae twice now and it seemed they had always had things to discuss. He just hoped that it was a friendship and not a delusion.

But whatever happened, Terrel knew he had a pack to fall back on and after all pack was more important than life.

Family was as thick as blood.

So he could never truly be alone…
