are the dead really silent?
It was a dance of the dead done by the living to honor and celebrate. My paws scratched at the ground, leaving gouges when I launched my large body into the air with this twists and turns that made me feel so free. As I move I close my eyes and let the wind take me. Spirits of the forest step forward to dance with me. Some who did not know the world interpreted it as play. Just as well, just as good. Joy was what was needed in the world. Even in sadness there is a balance with laughter.
The wind joins me, another partner as well as musician. There was nothing nature could not accommodate. A shift brought a scent to my attention. Eyes opened and movements slowed. I inhale a moment, movements only pausing to alter where I moved. Twisting, I circled the woman who arrived. Paws light on the ground, my pace was a simple lope. Contrary to my size, I made sure everything about what I did was non-threatening. The day was too beautiful for threats, the air too light. My paws bring me to a stop in front of her as my eyes travel up and down her body; absorbing her posture, her features, her confusion. I smile. She is too alive to die.
Her words make me chuckle. “It is merely the flow of the energy from the earth through me. Why deny the desire to dance when life and limb are so eager to do so?” Curious, I study her far more closely than I had while I circled. She walked in this world, was one of this realm, but she did not seem at peace with where she was. I grow concerned for this living soul. She was young, she was beautiful. How the world would rejoice in her song and dance. The pulse of the earth could so easily consume her, and the beauty that would spring forth would be breathtaking.
I can feel the soft, whispering laughter escape me again though I am confident my mouth did not open. My body lowers into a bow, my head ducked in an open invitation.
“Dance with me, lady? Answer the unheard call?” Let us bring the world around us to life?
