10 things you probably didn't know about sapphire
1. sapphy was inspired by a particularly challenging class of students that i taught this year. her speech mannerisms and some aspects of her personality are directly pulled from students in this class.
2. it's actually students like sapphy that i most enjoy teaching and want to work with.
3. sapphy's name comes from the protagonist in helen dunmore's "ingo" series. morveren's (thoth's familiar) name also comes from the same series. the only other thing my sapphy has in common with dunmore's sapphy is that they are both the younger sibling, and are approximately the same age.
4. while the character idea initially came from my students, the character was fleshed out more when i watched the documentary "one mile away", which is about gangs in birmingham. the title of the documentary is sapphy's subject line.
5. in the original character concept, sapphy was pregnant at 13. in a later version of the character i switched it around so that her sister was the one who had had a teen pregnancy.
6. if you asked her about her religion, sapphy would probably identify as auran. however, she's not practicing and knows nothing about religions - she would only identify this way because it's how her family (also not practicing) identify. she asked her mother once about religion and her mother replied "aura is the god of this country", to which sapphy took, "so she must be our god then".
7. sapphy's favourite food is a balti, a special curry dish invented in birmingham.
8. sapphy has an assortment of half-siblings on either side (many of which she's never met), but carla is her only full sibling. sapphy's dad left when she was a baby. the relationship with her parents had been rocky for a while, and when her mum found out she was pregnant with saph she persuaded him to stay. shortly after sapphy's birth, he left anyway. consciously or unconsciously, sapphy's mother has always been more unkind to her than carla because of it.
9. sapphy had never been around other fairies (apart from family members) before she moved to shaman.
10. when i was sketching sapphy's character out, i asked my brummie friends about potential areas she could be from. when i settled on aston, i asked if it would be safe to do a drive-by. i was told that it was completely safe as long as i went during the day and not after dark. because i worked so late at school, it was dark by the time i was getting home so i never did get to do the drive-by.
