Some are born great
Some achieve greatness

Seraphina did not baulk at his suggestion to explored the tunnel before them, but this was not overly surprisingly. At first, Vladimir had thought her to be a whiny little girl, but she had quickly changed his mind as to that ideology – she was just adventurous at Vladimir and his brother and never was the first to turn back when things got scary. But normally, ‘scary’ for them was imaginary monsters, not a real path, a real cave, a real chance that they may get lost. Nonetheless, she urged them onward and stole the leader’s position for herself. ‘Ladies first, as they say.’ He could feel her turn toward him but could only see the outline of her and none of her details… but it didn’t matter, he could hear the smirk in her vocals. Suddenly, he lost grip of her tail and he took a step toward her, wishing that they had not parted, but he held back, knowing that she didn’t need him to protect her, even though he always would. His audettes flickered back and forth as the sound of her pads scuffing the ground echoed off of the walls around them and he watched her turn toward him once more. ‘See you on the other end.’ A sudden increase in the noise signaled her descent and Vladimir felt his heart jump into his chest with worry.
He felt as if he couldn’t breathe, and truly he couldn’t for he was holding his breath, waiting for her to call up and say that she was safe, but all that resounded up toward him was scuffling, scraping… both of which were coming from the tunnel. His mind worked quickly to turn the noise into the scariest thing possible – the sound of a monster scraping against the walls heading toward him. The only thing that kept him from leaping headfirst down the hole without a second thought was the fact that she had not screamed – nothing to give him the idea that she was scared or injured. And if she wasn’t scared, then he couldn’t let on that he was scared, but for a different reason. He was not scared of the dark nor of potential monsters, but of the idea that she could be hurt by either of the two. Bright stars began to creep into his vision from both sides and he swayed slightly from his lack of oxygen. Lightheadedness took over him and it was only good timing that he heard a soft ‘woof’ that meant she had reached the bottom. His claws already dangling over the edge, he leaned forward slightly and slipped down, gasping as he dropping suddenly. While his body was relieved to once more have air available to it, Vladimir found that he got motion sickness from the sudden change in altitude. The tube brought him deeper and its winding, weaving way gave him more than one bump and bruise, and when he landed it was not with any sort of grace. Instead, he tumbled out and rolled into a heap at Seraphina’s paws. Quickly, he scrambled to his paws and shook out his pelt, but found that not all of the dirt came loose – some was too moist and clung to his pelt fast.
As he stood, he reached out to her to see if she was alright, but ended up with droplets of water and sand within his oculars. Vladimir growled in annoyance and rubbed his paws upon his face to clean them of the irritant but still as he realized that once more she was at his side, rubbing her flank against his, her tail wrapped against his… and he could not help but notice that her tail was wet. He opened his maw to make a smart alec retort but shut it smartly as she spoke first. ‘I’ll follow you wherever you go, Vlad. So what’s the plan?’ Vladimir smiled, glad that she was still relying on him to lead their way. He tried to peer ahead, but it was just as dark here as it had been above, if not darker. The only difference was that the ceiling here appeared to be higher – the echoes lasted longer and seemed to travel farther than they had before.
Pulling on her tail slightly, he moved to one side of the wall and then the other, and found that their path was relatively narrow… and the only way to go was straight ahead. “Well… I suppose we should go that way.” He laughed, hiding his nervousness, because he realized one very important thing – that the tunnel they had just come down was far too steep to ever go back up. And if they could not find another way out… if there wasn’t another way out… they would be stuck.
Shaking his head, he knocked loose that dangerous thought and instead focused on the fact that they had a way to go for now and were not trapped yet. “Come on Sera, let’s see where this leads.” Slowly, he moved forward in the water, each step tested on the loose stones before he trusted it with his full weight. Every few steps or so, he moved back and forth, testing the width of the tunnel. How long they walked in silence, he did not know, for who could tell time in a place without light, without sun? Whether it was 5 minutes or 5 hours that they traveled, the one thing that Vladimir did notice was that it was progressively getting narrower. “Sera, we are going to have to go in single file. Grab onto my tail… but don’t bite down too hard! You’ll mess up my perfect balance!” Once more, he chuckled and continued forward… until that is he felt the ceiling pressing down on his back. When had it gotten so much smaller? “ Sera… you are going to feel the cavern’s top soon. Don’t get nervous, we just will crawl. If it gets too much smaller we will just back out.” He hoped that he was right – that they would be able to back out… but if they got stuck…
Biting his own words, he crawled through, ensuring that he stayed in the lead. He wanted to make sure that if he got stuck, she would be able to back up still, as she was smaller than he was. Inch by inch, he crawled forward… until he very nearly got stuck. Vladimir fought down the terror of it all and took a risk by breathing all the way out to make his chest thinner. For a moment… it felt like the end. His lungs screamed for air, his brain told him to breathe, and his paws scrambled against the earth. Everything felt like a fog in which he could not think clearly… but then he managed to edge his front paws forward and gave himself the little bit more room he needed and to his relief, found that the pressure was starting to abate. As quickly as he could he scrambled forward and stood up, gasping for breath. “Seraphina… Sera are you alright?” He managed to get the words out in between ragged breaths… and although she was smaller than him, he knew that it was still going to be a tight fit for her…
