When mother had taken her to Salem, she had been excited and curious of the foreign land. It was like nothing she had ever seen before. Borders weren’t a concept to the young filly, so she had explored the vast majority of Salem in the seasons she was confined within its shores. The oasis in the Dunes had been her favorite. The fresh water, the scraggly shade tree, and the sleek herd she could see off in the distance that clearly enjoyed this being their home. Although it was fun to explore, Aase quickly grew tired of the sun and heat, and impatient to go home.


Against her mother’s rules, and when poor Nadja wasn’t looking, Aase had quickly entered the cool waters that had brought her here and headed back to the Crossing. Winter had gone, so she didn’t see any danger of traveling alone. Aase remembered the way mother had brought her (or so she thought) and would make quick time back to Tinuvel. Back to where she belonged. Maybe her older sister in the Inlet would take her in until father returned?


The scenery looked mostly familiar to the young mare when she stepped onto the shore of the Crossing and shook herself free of the water clinging to her now sleek skin. Having stayed on Salem long enough that she had lost her thick Tinuvel coat that would have made the water cling to her much longer. Picking the direction that felt right, Aase moved into a trot. Her eyes bright with excitement that she was finally going home.


Only, as the thick trees thinned, and she broke out into an open meadow, Aase slowed, and then came to a halt. Her eyes dimming with confusion as she looked around. This looked terribly wrong. Mother hadn’t taken her through a meadow to get to Salem. How had she gotten here? And was she even going the right way to get to Tinuvel?
