aurora -----
by covet out of raya

It isn’t long before she hears the rustling of the overhang. It isn’t easy to keep track of time once the sun and her eyesight disappear for the night but it’s still a little surprising at how quickly her invitation is accepted. Her other senses have always been a little sharper to compensate for her weak eyes but they really kick in at night; she can tell from the movement that it’s the younger of the two that has arrived first.

Even before the filly (she assumes by the bounding steps) speaks, Aurora is smiling. She’d had the same kind of boisterous attitude, back before her disability had really begun to dictate her life. “It is a nice tree,” she agrees. She’d actually been shocked when she’d come across it, unable to believe that she hadn’t found it before. Then she’d remembered that she wouldn’t be the best candidate for scouting the place.

The sounds of the stallion following the filly in make her ears twitch and she has to resist the impulse to open her eyes, knowing it would be pointless as it’s surely dark by now. She may not be able to see at night, but she has to remind herself that her new companions can. “I’m sorry if I was presumptuous in offering shelter,” she addresses the stallion. “I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop but I heard you mention finding a place for the night.” She offers a smile toward the last place she’d heard him rustling about, hoping that she won’t make a fool of herself by being too slow in tracking the pair’s movements.

Even with her eyes closed, Aurora’s head turns back toward the girl’s voice. “I wouldn’t necessarily call it my willow tree,” she says with a wide grin, “I only found it this morning.” Maybe now she’ll be able to spend more than one day in the same place – if she has others with her, she’d surely be safe enough to not have to move to the next arboreal sanctuary come daybreak. Before long, she'll have done a full circuit of the island if she keeps up this pace.

Her head tilts back to the stallion as he interrupts his daughter’s introduction. He seems a little brusque but not hostile; without being able to see his expression, she's in the dark (no pun intended). She smiles easily at him. “It’s nice to meet you both. My name’s Aurora.”

She pauses to frown contemplatively. His question is so simple and yet when it comes to the islands it’s a question that can get very complicated. “I was born here, yes,” she confirms. “Have you ever been here before? The islands can be confusing to navigate for newcomers.”
