trade in your darkness for the light

“Hello, Creed.”

Sand and pebbles crunched under her hooves as Evren approached the slim little mare. Her head was high, her expression open and friendly, and she offered a wide smile that belied the fact that she and Creed had never spoken one-on-one before. She waited a moment, giving the mare a chance to react to her presence, and looked out across the water at the point on the horizon Creed had been fixated on. The sea was grey and choppy today: a fitting representation of the mood that currently hung over the forest. Though the worst of Evren’s anger had cooled off, she still felt the pain of Persephone’s absence like a rock in her gut.

“I thought we should finally talk, given the situation. And, well, because we’ve never talked properly before.” She flashed the mare another smile. “How are you doing?”

Evren knew the question was redundant. It was clear by Creed’s restlessness, her wistful glances across the ocean, and the lines of melancholy on her face how she was doing. But it felt polite and necessary to at least ask, given how little they knew one another. But Evren hoped to change that. Now that she was to stay in the forest permanently, she hoped to get to know every member on a close and personal level.

She stepped a little closer to Creed, and - as if about to share a secret with her - lowered her voice. Her amber-brown eyes were full of sympathy and locked steadily on Creed’s face. “I hope you don’t blame yourself. Persephone knows the risks of being a leader, and she went willingly. I would have done the same, in her place.”
