The nightmare that became reality

Ruger

Darkness settled over the Prairie; the moon in hiding although the stars still dotted the sky. The stallion picked his way through the waving grasses by memory more than sight, his lupine gaze barely able to detect the dips and holes along the worn path. The soft sound of water lapping at the shore made his ears flick forward, his stride pausing just as his hooves touched the cold liquid. The last time he had left his home was when he had found Evanescence in the Commons; though in truth he supposed that wasn’t very long ago. The way she had been taken from the Prairie so quickly did not set right with him, but still he was forced to just stand there and watch her go. Unable to do anything about it.

Felony would have tried to kill him for such failures.

Ears pinning, the stallion pawed out in agitation, splashing the water up onto his chest and belly. Surely that beast had lost fights to? His father could not be All Mighty as he had always acted. With a harsh snort and a shake of his head, the painted stallion moved off into the water. The sharp cold that enveloped him helped to snap his mind away from the past. Ruger was able to focus, pushing away the past and look to what was before him which was the swim back to the Crossing.

When Ruger first pulled himself up onto the sandy shore, he was not sure where to go. Yellow eyes first look towards the Commons; perhaps he could score up another mare to make up for the one he had lost? No, that had not been why he had taken Evanescence in the first place. Tail snapping in irritation, he turned away and headed towards the Falls. At least there he would be left alone, to hide away from drama for a bit and hopefully hide from the memories that wouldn’t let him sleep.

But the stallion did not sleep. Instead, as he came to rest by the Falls, more memories plagued him. Ruger did not leave the place he stood, even as the sun began to rise and chase away the inky darkness of night. The sun lit up his flesh, giving his two toned skin a warm hue as the light cast pastel colors to celebrate the dawn.
