then your handmaids have failed you

The cold of winter was still in full swing and he shivered as he grabbed another bite, digging past the white snow to get the sweet grass underneath. His thin Arabian coat wasn't built for this weather but he told himself he could tough it out. His ears swiveled around alertly, ever aware of his surroundings and those in it. Mostly he just smelled and saw other horses milling around, some socializing and others going out of their way to avoid it. He'd been making his rounds and getting into practice spars with anyone who would join him. Mare or stallion, he didn't care. He wanted to keep himself in fighting shape. With the bachelor herd he used to run with, spars were a daily thing but here on the islands, they were harder to come by. He wouldn't let himself go just because he found Talien. No, it was for her sake that he would make sure he was always ready if his fighting prowess was called upon.

His latest spar was with a sturdy grullo mare who held her own but in the end, he'd been the victor. He had his share of bruises and bite marks but they were superficial and went along nicely with the other scars he'd collected over the years. He wasn't expecting to find company so soon so when he heard someone call out, his ears flicked around in surprise as his head snapped up, nostrils flaring automatically to take in the red dun mare's scent. She seemed a little freshly battered herself and his brow furrowed in concern, hoping no one had attacked her. He knew better than to judge first though. She could just as easily have gone after someone herself or been in a spar to get those marks. She didn't look like she came off too badly, but he could see the subtle swelling behind her shoulder. She could have just as easily tore something running though so he wouldn't assume.

It certainly did nothing to make her shy so he thought no more of it. She asked if he saw anything good out there and he gave a gentle snort, shaking out his mane before he pawed at another patch of snow. "A few good mouthfuls of grass if you stick close to the stream but otherwise, just a lot of snow." He admitted with a small smile, his gaze friendly and open as he stayed where he was in case she didn't like to be crowded. He looked around before tilting his head in her direction. "Did you sleep here? I only ask because you don't seem wet from a swim and I don't smell a herd on you." He wondered if she chose to be a loner or if something happened. Concern flickered in his gaze as he waited patiently for her response.
