He hated that most of the new mares to the herd had only seen him as the grieving lead stallion and he wondered if that had pushed some of them away. He wished he'd had more time to get to know Mazarine before Solomon came to challenge for her, but he wouldn't give up on her. Not until she told him to. As the sun set over the sand dunes, Cain grazed calmly by the borders, keeping a careful eye out for more tresspassers since other stallions seemed to think his herd was plump for the taking. He liked to make a small target of himself. He didn't steal mares or try to cause trouble with other herds. He just wanted to exist peacefully with his herd of mares and give them the best life he could. Was that too much to ask?

The gentle nicker made his ear flick before he lifted his head and responded with a nicker in turn to Melisma. Seeing her familiar dark form coming toward him, his lips tugged into a welcoming smile as he dipped his head in greeting. "Still like to travel in the dark, I see." He said out of observation, his brown eyes twinkling with amusement. She seemed more relaxed this time around and that brought hope to his gaze. She brought up sad terms and his ears flicked back before he sighed and shook out his mane. "Such is the life of a herd stallion, I suppose. Always someone who wants what you have." When she said she didn't want to watch his sadness, he tilted his head, one brow lifting expectantly before his eyes widened in surprise at her offer.

With a snort, he shook his head, his ears flattening to his scalp in distaste as his nostrils wrinkled. "I appreciate the gesture, Melisma, but I would never do that to you. I know you are volunteering and I appreciate it, but it is not your burden to sacrifice for the herd. I will get her back if that's what she wants, all in good time. I will fight but I will not give up one mare for another just as I would never steal a mare to trade back to him. That would make me just as bad as he is." He hoped she wasn't offended by his quick shutdown on her offer. He knew she was only trying to help, but he didn't want to lose her. He never wanted to lose a mare, but he was learning fast that came with the territory. Melisma stood with more confidence now and his eyes sparked with admiration, glad to see her standing more firmly on her own four hooves.

She was already growing from the mare he met on the mainland. He just hoped she could see that too. He tilted his head suddenly in thought before leaing toward her a little. "If you do want to help, there is something, though. Perhaps if you run into one of his mares on the mainland, you can gauge what kind of leader he is? I feel one mare would speak to another more openly than another herd stallion." He hoped that wasn't asking too much of her. Maybe it would continue to pull her out of her shell and she wouldn't feel like she was doing nothing. She might even run into a mare that wasn't happy with Solomon then Cain wouldn't feel so bad about challenging for them so he could offer them freedom. One could hope.
