Burn the world down and meet me in hell. (birthing post)

Hellfyre had been irritable, so was thankful most were keeping there distance, she had been trying to doze in the much welcome sunshine but kept getting disturbed, either by this foal who seemed fit to kick their way out her belly or by the low grade pain she kept getting. She was anxious, worried of doing something wrong that would cause harm to the foal, worried of letting Canis down, in short she was just worried about everything.

She’d even plucked up the courage to talk to some of the other mares in the herd who’d had foaled before, seeking advise and reassurance that everything she was experiencing was normal and nothing to be concerned about. They had been kind to the inexperienced mare but she had felt a fool for asking all the same.
Give her a battle plan and she’d know exactly what to do, but giving birth… yer that was scarier to her.

It was later that night, when everyone was asleep, including her that she was awoken by sudden pain. Her eyes blinked open, automatically scanning for danger, it was second nature for her to look for a cause, her brain took a little longer to catch up in the fog of sleep as to what was happening, something that was instantly corrected when another sharp pain shot through her abdomen. The ’danger’ her eyes had been trying to find wasn’t external though. No, she was going into labour.

She groaned as the pain came again, she was glad she had been sleeping further from the herd the past few nights, she wouldn’t be disturbed and neither would she wake anyone. Having moved away from the spot she had been sleeping she allowed instincts to take over, she might not know what to do but she trusted her instincts would know the right thing.
Dropping to the ground, she breathed through the pain of the contractions and simply pushed. She thanked whatever gods above that the birth was thankfully quick and without complication and in what felt like very little time she was exhausted, still laying down and gazing at her child.

Her child. Something she never would have dreamed about in her old life, but here there was no war, no strife, her child could grow up in peace. Having given herself a few minutes to take it all in she hauled her exhausted self back onto her feet, once more letting instincts guide her as she began to clean the foal off. She at least had an idea of what to do here and why, having been present for a few births in her old herd.

Focusing her full attention on the the little filly, her daughter she thought with a smile, as the foal was trying to lip at her mothers nose, clearly hungry, Hellfyre let out a silent chuckle you’ll have to stand for that my love she whispered to her before offering her a gentle nudge.
The foal was quick to attempt to get to her feet, falling only twice before getting the hang of it with her mothers support, she’d heard many a mare say that fillies were always quick to get onto their feet, seemed her child was no exception to that.

With wide brown eyes the red dun filly was taking everything in before turning her attention to her mothers side, nudging her belly as she searched for what she needed, when her mother nudged her rump slightly she teetered forward on long legs, her muzzle searching for something she was sure was in this area, dipping her head lower before finding her mothers udder and latching on, her swishing in contentment.

Hellfyre didn’t know she could love something or someone as much as she did this precious little bundle that was part her and part Canis, as the filly started to nurse she closed her eyes, feeling at peace, a odd feeling after how anxious she had been about the birth.
That was when alarm bells started going off in her mind, her eyes flew open as she realised she had completely let her guard down.
She knew predators would be drawn to the smell of a birth, hoping for a quick meal but she could hear movement and it sounded too big to be any of the normal predators in the area.
Ca..Canis she stammered out nervously, she hoped like hell this wasn’t the night she met an unfamiliar intruder.
