He thought he had seen a female or two this spring that looked a little bigger in the stomach area so he was hoping that meant puppies. That's what his dad had told him anyway, that getting bigger there usually meant a female was pregnant, but not always. He had warned Triton never to assume because that could get him in trouble. Females have a nasty temper. His dad was very smart in Triton's eyes. He soon heard someone coming up behind him, soft toes squishing in the wet sand. As he spun around, his tail only wagged that much more if you could believe it, his eyes lighting up at the sight of his aunt Samia. He loved her! She was so bright and energetic. She was better at keeping up with him most days than his own parents. She showed him all kinds of cool plants and stuff and tried to explain how important they were. Most of them smelled bad to him so he dismissed it but he did like to hear her talk.
He saw her look over the other female and his face dropped a little. Uh oh, what was she up to? She had that look in her eyes like before she would snatch his food right out from under his nose and make him chase her around to get it back. She trotted right up to him and his eyes started to shine with suspicion now, his body tensing as he leaned back and she put her paw on his head. He made an "omph" sound with a grunt, his lip curling as she then promptly licked his nose. "Ew, aunt Samia!" He shook his head vigorously and crinkled up his nose. He barely listened to what she said to the other female, only catching on one word: miss. So he should call her that, not ma'am then! He was so embarrassed otherwise. Why did she have to do that! He was trying to get some cool points!
But before he could get to use the word he was sure would fit the wolf, she gave him another word. Her name! He clung to it. He knew another wolf's name! It was a big thing for him. He had asked her if she was busy and she told him that she hoped not. He smirked. "I hope not too." His eyes twinkled. As Samia approached, though he noted a change in Matianak's body language. She was almost glaring at Samia. He loved his aunt but he didn't want his new friend to go. He looked between them, his ears flicking back uncertainly as his tail slowed down in its wagging. He heard Matianak's voice trailing off and she seemed more thoughtful all of a sudden. He didn't like it. Surely she wasn't going to just go now! She said she wasn't busy! As if to reassure him, she said that she wasn't busy today and that even busy wolves need a break. He grinned encouragingly at her.
"Yes, they do! You deserve a break. Can I call you Matty?" Her name was a mouthful. Then she asked about walking the beach and his tail started wagging again. He practically skipped to her side, ready to talk as always. "Maybe you can even meet Charlie!" He exclaimed as he checked the skies for the trouble making seagull. He tried to stay in step beside her, only glancing back once to see if Samia was going. He loved his aunt but he was making a new friend and she was ruining it!
