PERSEPHONE

Persephone emerged from the ocean slick and sparkling in the dim light, water dripping down her white-flecked sides and gathering like diamonds at the edge of her curves. She had failed to take much notice of the time when she set out on her journey from Luthien, but it was still early in the morning, the sky just growing into daytime from its slumber.

She paused a moment to shake herself, and to drink in the sight of the Crossing, quiet and barely awake. It wasn’t often she saw it like this. There was something almost peaceful and serene about it. Admiring the quiet, she began to wander slowly through the Common, headed for the Peak, as she intended to fulfil her promise to Macabre.

It was as she wandered through the grassy land that a flicker of movement to her side caught her eye, and Persephone turned her head to see a dark, slender mare grazing somewhat nervously a little way off.

Persephone paused in her step, considering her options for a moment, before turning towards the stranger with a small nicker to alert the other woman of her presence, in case she hadn’t noticed already. Slowly, she moved towards the stranger, offering a small smile in greeting as she drew closer. She came to a halt a few strides away, always wary of crowding an unknown companion.

“Hello,” she said, her dark eyes settling curiously on the other mare. “What brings you to the Common when it’s so quiet, stranger?”
