“Are you sure you’re alright?” Castillon’s dark eyes looked over his father as Zevulun dropped his lips to the stream and drank deep, quenching his thirst after he’d successfully (or so he thought) beat the Lagoon bachelor and driven him out of the Prairie. Zevulun glanced up at his son and offered him a tired, but loving smile.

“I’m fine, son.”

It had been the first real battle his father had to test himself in since he’d suffered his nearly life-ending injury last year. Castillon cast a doubtful glance along his father’s side and down to the scarred leg that was sometimes difficult for him to look at, not that he’d ever tell that to Zevulun.

Zevulun snorted. “You’re about to insult me if you keep looking at me like I’m going to break into a million pieces,” he chided Castillon, who’s eyes darted to him before he grinned somewhat sheepishly. Despite nearing his fourth year, there was still much to Castillon that was boyish. He was like his father in many ways, but one of the biggest ones was the way he wore his emotions on the surface, all too easily readable.

“Sorry, dad,” Castillon huffed. “I just worry about you.”

“I know, and that’s very kind of you,” Zevulun said, though his tone was somewhat playful - I’m the one who’s supposed to worry about you, kid. “But you have pregnant mares to worry about now. A family who is counting on you to keep them safe. A herd seeking peace, which was nearly disturbed.”

Castillon blinked and then nodded, understanding dawning over him. He drew a few steps back, caught his father’s eye and the smile that he wore, smiled back, then turned around and trotted off away from where he’d come across his father after the fight. He was worried it’d been a specific attack, but his father had assured him it had every sign of being nothing more than happenstance. An opportunistic bachelor trying to pad the numbers within the Lagoon borders. Zevulun had driven him off and that was that.

Right?

Wrong.

As Castillon walked along through the Prairie, doing a sweep and making sure everything was as it should be, he spotted a very familiar figure not too far away. Immediately a hard snort vibrated out of his nostrils and he surged forward. He had not recently exerted himself in any fights; he was fresh, and his adrenaline had already been spiked before from watching his father clash with this stallion.

“Get away from her, you brute,” Castillon seethed as he moved up between them, casting one worried glance at the Prairie resident, seeing she was unharmed, and then fixing that cold stare back on the stallion in front of him. “The Prairie has nothing for you here.”
