moondust in your lungs | Nephilim

The young black thing skirted its way up the dune eagerly. She was young, too young to be called a full-grown mare though not by much. Cresting the small rise, her brown eyes searched the span of ocean between herself and the world beyond. She hoped to find a visitor, though not a stranger to the shores of the Prairie. Nephilim. He was a friend of sorts to Castillon and had visited a few times the last few seasons to speak with him. The world revealed in those conversations seemed vast and full of many things to the marvelling brindle.

Vervain was, of course, curious about the lands outside her home. There were not only the other territories on Luthien itself, but whole other islands to consider as well. Nevermind the wide world beyond all that, too! So, naturally it was the snippets of story of life outside the Prairie that had initially caught her ear. She'd been cautious about revealing too much of her interest in them and, more recently, their teller.

After still seeing nothing and no one after a few minutes, the butterflies that had previously been fluttering in her gut sank like small pebbles. It had been a long shot that he was even coming that day. She could only approximate from what he'd casually mentioned in passing, which was something to the effect of "after the first frost." Frosts could happen at different times across the islands. They varied at least slightly in climates: this being something she'd gleaned from Zevulun, the stallion who had raised her. Dark ears flicked back, and the girl chewed lightly at her lower lip as her thoughts processed.

With a sigh, Vervain turned her silver-riddled body and began to stroll down the beach instead. She might as well enjoy the day, right? The saltgrass whispered against the young female's sides as she went. What was she even really hoping for in seeing the painted stallion coming? Dark satin lips pulled to one side at the thought that was perhaps meant to be a tad self-deprecating. What? She'd see him coming, then run over somewhere closer unseen but still manage to "come upon" him all cool-like, then..... what? Have another conversation about places she'd never been, horses she'd never met, in an attempt to spend more time with him?

The brindled girl was new to liking and wanting to be liked. She was nearly three and grown, sure. Boys from elsewhere were still different and exciting in a way that was new and unfamiliar. It was "the norm" to meet someone, go live with them, and have a whole life (and babies?) together. Was it so bad to think maybe she wouldn't have to look too far at all? All in theory, of course. It wasn't as if the black had outright said anything to him. Wouldn't it have been mortifying if she said too much and he started avoiding her? Vervain supposed it wouldn't matter much now, at least maybe not today.
