It was only twilight, but the moon was already rising high in the darkening sky. The faint twinkling of the stars were it's only company. The cool light cast a silvery glow on the world below, it was beautiful. Shadow had always preferred the night to the day. There was just something about the stars, and the moon, and the darkness that she loved. She was picking her way easily through the trees, living up to her given name. She was nothing more than a rippling shadow here, her ebony pelt blending seamlessly with the darkness. Her gait was easy, a smooth loping. She was in no hurry to get anywhere, but she enjoyed being able to move so freely, without worry. She paused for a moment, ears perked forward, listening. The sound of rushing water came to her and she smiled ever so slightly. She was close. She picked up her pace once more, her movements barely making a sound in the quiet of the night.

She emerged from the treeline and promptly came to a halt. Shadow was never one for open spaces, she just didn't feel safe being so exposed. It was habit that she stuck to dense areas, places where she was easily hidden. Cool gaze feel upon the flowing water of the river. It shimmered in the pale moonlight, like rushing silver. The fey sank down to a laying position near the base of a large pine, slender forelimbs crossed in front of her. She looked almost regal, the way she held herself. Her frame was still slim, lithe, even in her age. One would never tell she was really as old as she was. Her black feathered wings ruffled before she brought them in, holding them tightly to her body. It was good to be back, she had been saying that time and time again to herself since her return. But, it was the truth. She had missed this place, the memories it held for her. In all her wanderings, there had never been a place quite like the mountain, there had never been others quite like those she had found here. This was her home, and she had never regreted making it so.

It had been so long since her last visit, though. And she was certain so much had changed, even if the landscape had not. She wondered about LZ, whether he still held Wind Gale. She wondered about her children, she hadn't seen any of them in so long. And, that was her fault. She pushed others away, so afraid to let anyone get close. So afraid to be hurt. So she left, she wandered. She was a lone wolf, in every sense of the word, and yet.. There were still those who managed to break through those walls. Try as she may, she had been caught a few times when she least expected it. A soft sigh escaped her. She sank down, her head resting softly between her paws. Her gaze turned towards the necklace, past the glowing silvery-blue orb, to the most prized possession she had; the golden feather. A constant reminder of happier times. Of the one who gave her a family. Those happy times with her pups, with someone who had loved her, she would never forget it. And, perhaps that's why she always came back in the end. Maybe she was a secret optimist, always hopeful to recapture those feelings from so long ago. She snorted, no. That was all in the past, she needed to remember that. One can never go back to what once was, everything changes, everything moves on. Nothing can ever be the way it had been. She looked away from the feather, turning her attentions to the sky above, instead. The cold, distant stars, that silver disk, they were all the company she had now. They were all she needed to get by.
