Burn the land and boil the sea

Serenity

The young minx had tried so hard to fit in with the herd, but her every attempt was met with a back lash. She felt horrible and she was afraid that perhaps she might have disappointed Verci. He had after all, brought her home to help cheer the herd up and she hasn’t even managed to do that. She has met a delightful companion named OWL but she’s been a stranger as of late and disappeared almost as quickly as she had appeared. She tried with a few of the other ladies but they seemed to see her coming and made quick to leave; at least that’s how the appaloosa painted mare felt.

She truly had tried. She tried being friendly and happy (because let us face it, it’s not possible for her to be sad for a long period of time) but none of that seemed to work. Everyone seemed to make it a point to ignore her and the more she tried to become part of the herd, the more they ignored her. So, for the time being she has decided to just linger and watch the workings of it all. She knew that one of them was vying for a leadership position and if it was the cranky one she thought it was, well that one had won no favors with her. She knew there was another who was thinking about it and perhaps with the right amount of conversation; she could be persuaded to agree. Although, it doesn’t seem to matter much since she can’t get any one of them to hold a decent conversation with her.

From her little perch, she watches everyone around her. Trees surround her and hide her frame. Legs are folded underneath her bodice and soft but bright eyes watch the women and their children. She lays her head down for a moment, allowing herself to wallow in self-pity for just a moment. Moments like this are far and few but they do happen. They say that the happiest creatures are ones that have the most to hide. Does Serenity have anything to hide? Perhaps not, but she does feel like she let Verci down and has decided to be a coward for the time being.

She watches everyone move through their life. The mothers dote on their children with love, a love she envies for she never had that. She doesn’t envy the children or the mother’s their bond, she just envies the love in general. She doesn’t know what true love is like; all she knows is what manipulated love can be. It isn’t a feeling she wants to go through again and it is a feeling she desperately hopes she won’t ever put her own babe through.

As she wallows through her thoughts and her musings of the world around her, a scent catches her off guard. It’s the captain. She has seen him every now and then in her wanderings of the land, but he always seemed so distant and far away that she didn’t even entertain the idea of bothering him. Yet, this time he seems to be making a point to mingle with the others. Feeling curious and also feeling like she should apologize for being such a big sticking failure she decides to head down towards him.

Slowly she unfolds her legs and stands on the front ones before giving herself a big push upwards. Then with a shake she’s off. She slides down her small perch that had been looking over the others with ease and trots off towards her lord. Her short legs move rapidly and her mane bounces as she moves and there is a determination that burns strongly in her eyes. She knows the others might not welcome her presences, but she isn’t going to allow them to push her away. She’s tired of being the outcast when all she wants to do is put a smile on everyone’s face, but there are those who prefer to be cranky.

Her determination seems likely to fail her, but her willpower keeps her going. She watches as Verci shares a breath with another but the name eludes her and she watches as he moves further in land. She hopes to catch him before he’s too far inland. She doesn’t want to apologize in front of all the ladies for she doesn’t want to appear weak. That would never do. Oh no, her pride would not like that. Rounding around him so that she comes upon his left, she offers him a soft whicker and a bright and cheery smile.

“Why hello captain! It’s nice to see you setting flight once more.” Her words are smooth but filled with energy. Ears are pushed forward in excitement and in attention. “I hope I’m not intruding into your space, I…” Words that once started off so happily and confident turn to soft and hesitate. The last part draws out for just a second before she puts on her determined face and pushes onward.

“I….Ijustwantedtoapologizeforsuckingatmakingyourherdhappier.” In one breath she speaks of what has been bothering her for so long and she turns a sad eye on to the red dun. “I really am so so sorry. I know you brought me here to help and all I’ve done is make one mad at me without trying to and the others, I’ve tried…I really have…I am so so so so sorry. I understand if you don’t want me around anymore. I also understand if you think I am a burden.” Her words come out in a flurry now and the happy face is replaced with a forlorn and heartbroken look. She’s afraid that he’ll tell her to leave but she’s even more afraid that he’ll just ignore her like the rest.
