At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Mae was happily settled within Saw Tooth now, the Iota proud of her place amongst the pack. She’d explored the pack territory well enough to know her way around, to choose her favourite place to be and know how to locate the clearing for pack meetings. She’d even managed to get past her shy exterior a couple of times, enough to make a few friends in the pack. In time she hoped to become acquainted with the rest of the wolves she now thought of as family. She’d recently spent time with Cai, learning about the borders and developing how she dealt with wolves attempting to pass through the pack’s lands. The femme was glad to be able to spend time working for the pack, helping them in her own way. She’d also met Terrel, an interesting male with whom she’d spent some time on an, admittedly failed but still fun, fishing trip.

As much as she enjoyed her life within the pack, she knew she’d always occasionally feel the urge to travel outside for small stretches of time. Hunting trips helped with that, as she got the best of both worlds in spending time with the pack and moving outside the territory. The pack lands had been fairly quietly recently, ever since the pair of newcomers joined the pack, so Mae decided to take the opportunity to leave for the day. There were no scents of other wolves surrounding the borders, well none that were recent at least, so she headed out with the confidence that she wouldn’t be missed for a while. Her favourite place within the territory was the large river, it’s calming flow spreading peace through her body whenever she lay next to it and allowing her to relax without worry. With that in mind, she was originally heading for the main river in the forest. However, she changed direction after a few minutes of thinking. Known as Romance River, through a beautiful place to be there were often many head strong males lurking around. Whenever she tried to rest there, it wasn’t long before someone would disturb her peace or pairs of mates would cause her to move back into the trees.

She wasn’t against the idea of a mate, but it was hard for her to open up to others and she didn’t appreciate being approached by loud, obnoxious wolves no matter their gender or purpose. She also didn’t appreciate already mated pairs thinking that because there were two of them they had automatic control over the nicest stretches of the river. It being day time, and relatively warm, she guessed a couple of wolves would already be there. Not wanting to be near too many strangers, she changed her course towards a stretch further upstream of her original destination. It didn’t take the lithe femme long to reach Staircase Falls. It was admittedly a beautiful place, though in a different way to other parts of the river, and on the couple of times she’d visited it had been interesting to see the changes the steps of stones caused to the rushing river.

A slender dab of grey against the greens and browns indicated the femme as she stepped from the trees. Her posture was relaxed, tail low and fairly still. She was not on the pack lands now and didn’t wish to appear threatening to anyone nearby, not interested in dealing with strangers she knew existed only to make the lives of other wolves a problem. In her time travelling alone she’d had more than enough troubles which shaped her personality and made her rather skittish around wolves she didn’t know. She slunk forwards, dipping her head carefully to lap at the fresh water. The water flowing here, over mineral rich rocks, couldn’t be matched anywhere she’d been. It filled her nicely and cooled her throat. Lifting her head, she let out a content sigh and looked around.

An unmistakable pelt of brown hues caught her eyes and her ears perked up in surprise. She hadn’t expected to see any of her pack mates outside the territory today, let alone one she considered almost a friend, if not already one. A small smile slipped onto her face as Terrel lowered his head to his paws, the unique pelt shifting with his movements. In all her travels, she’d never seen a wolf with such an interesting coat and she wondered what his parents looked like. He’d mentioned when they met that he was adopted by his current mother, so she had already decided not to ask about it unless he brought it up; it was probably a sensitive subject. However, that didn’t mean she couldn’t talk to him at all. She padded over to him, gentle steps carrying her until she stood nearby. “Hey,” she greeted him in her usual soft voice, “I wasn’t expecting to see anyone I knew outside the pack territory.” Her tail began to wag slowly, barely noticeably.
