I watch him from the shadows even as he comes into the clearing. I knew Uno would get him to come. I don't know what story he told them to get him to come but it doesn't matter. I don't want to come out, not just yet. He seems almost lighter out here, like the burden of the pack is lifting from his shoulders as he gets further away. He seems almost younger like this. I almost forget that Amir is getting up in age too. He still seems like the young wolf I trained so long ago. I hear he's training my own son Exodus now. He seems mezmerized by something so I turn to let my gaze follow his. A white rose is by itself in the middle of the clearing. He slowly approaches it and leans down to sniff it. The minute the whine leaves his lips, I tense, wanting to go out and talk to him, comfort him in some way. I watch as his legs extend and he drops to the ground, surrounding the rose with his legs like he's protecting it. He seems so lost, so helpless. It breaks my heart. Unable to take it anymore, I step out into the clearing, ears pricked forward as I slowly walk to him. I stop a few feet away and lower my head, my voice soft. "Amir...please, don't grieve, at least not over me." |
