living through a memory Talien

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her. Every time he stopped for a minute to think, the amber champagne mare was never far from his thoughts. He still remembered that time they first met as foals. He couldn't stop thinking about how creamy her fur was, like gold in the right lighting. It made her seem precious, valuable, even to a playful colt such as he was. He'd made sure to introduce himself to her straight away, wanting to put a name to that pretty face. Talien, she'd said. They became inseparable, playing and confiding in each other. He told her all his secrets, even those he kept from his own parents. They didn't know about the darkness inside him, the thing he called his dark passenger. But Talien knew, and though he still questioned it to this day, she said she understood. She never saw it as a flaw, his fascination with blood and the first time he blacked out as a yearling and almost killed another yearling colt....she forgave him.

He'd blacked out when the colt started hitting on Talien and she refused to entertain him. It wasn't the fact that the colt was interested in her (at least, that's what he kept telling himself) but the fact that she told him no and the colt wouldn't listen. He kept harassing her, trying to touch her, trying to herd her, and the moment the colt dared to touch her, Dex stopped thinking and started acting. Before he knew it, he was rearing up over the colt's prone body and saw the fear riddled in his eyes. The colt couldn't move, couldn't do anything more than tremble, waiting for the last crashing blow. But Dex realized what was happening and made sure his hooves missed their mark on the last blow, hitting the ground beside his head instead. Not wanting to see the look in her eyes after that, he'd run off, only for her to chase him down and comfort him instead of scold him. He'd expected her to be scared of him, to not want to be around him anymore, but she surprised him, like she always did.

He would never forget that day, nor the precious memories that came after. Their time was cut short when he was sent away from the herd to join a band of bachelors. He was getting too old and becoming a threat to the lead stallion, especially with his growing fondness for Talien. By the time the band came back around by his old herd lands, Dex had scoped out the herd only to find it missing one amber champagne mare. Where was she? Panic drove him to run right into the territory, knowing the risk he was taking. Luckily, a herd mare found him first, an old friend, and she told him that Talien had left of her own volition, though she didn't know where she would have gone. Dex decided right then and there to find her and tell her how he really felt, always he'd always felt and just been afraid to say it. He was afraid of her possible rejection. What if she didn't want him like that? What if he was too damaged?

But he had to know for sure or he'd never be able to let her memories go. So Dex left the bachelor herd and started scoping out the surrounding land. He knew there were islands around. Could she be on one of those? He had to start somewhere so he headed into the free lands, hoping to come across her scent, just something to send him in the right direction.
