I try to keep a careful eye on the bull seal while I herd the pup toward Solitaire. He seems ready, lunging at the pup to go for whatever he could reach. The pup calls out to its mother in distress, blood soon coating it's slimy skin as Solitaire grabs it but now we've got a new problem. I bark at Solitaire in warning as the bull seal suddenly charges in, bellowing it's anger as it swins its tusks toward my brother. Seizing the moment, I dive for a back flipper and grab hold, trying to drag the seal away from Solitaire. Of course it probably outweighs me by at least 200 pounds so he doesn't move. If anything, I think I just pissed him off.
The flipper starts swinging and the bull seal tries to spin around and gore me but it moves slow and I try not to let go of the flipper. He ends up hitting me with his great bulk, shoving me off with ferocity. I yelp at the impack, feeling it bruise as I roll in the sand but I get right back up, barking to make sure Solitaire is okay and see if he's still attacking the pup seal. I don't want it to get away but I also don't want him to get hurt. I invited him on this hunt after all. I'll never forgive myself if I get my brother hurt.
The mother seal is headed back to shore now, possibly to help and I grind my teeth in frustration, knowing time is short to end the pup. Once it's dead, the others should give it up as lost and leave us to drag our prize off since they won't see the point in endangering themselves for a corpse. Our best bet is to attack the pup at every opportunity so maybe they'll give up their attacks. The bull seal charges at me and I dodge, snapping at it's shoulder but I feel only air between my jaws.
I run a wide circle around the bull seal, diving at the pup seal now and grabbing onto it's side flipper. I feel my teeth slide through and I jerk my head, trying to pull the pup on its side so it'll have less of a chance of getting away. As it cries out and starts to stumble, I feel a tusk scratch up my left flank. I yelp and let go in surprise more than pain but the pup takes advantage, regaining it's balance as it tries to go toward it's mother, who's now beaching herself up on the sand again and bellowing her upset. I snap my head around to look for Solitaire, wondering how he's faring.
